The Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF) boasts the most powerful supercomputers in the world. They’ll soon surpass “petascale” in their processing capability which allows simulations of the brain, weather patterns, the universe — mindblowingly complex systems.

So do we work for computer technicians? No, actually. A key purpose at ALCF is to train teams of scientists and software engineers to use the operating systems of these super high performance machines. This lowers barriers to executing science projects related to data analysis, modeling and simulation, or machine learning (a kind of artificial intelligence).
